How to Activate the Ancestry DNA Kit at ancestrydna.com/activate?

If you have recently purchased an AncestryDNA Kit, you will need to activate it before you can use it. The standard shipping delivers DNA kits usually within 10 business days. However, if you have opted for expedited shipping, you can expect the delivery within three business days.  Once you receive the delivery, you can activate the Ancestry DNA kit at the ancestrydna.com/activate page by following these instructions.

Before you Activate the Ancestry DNA Kit, Confider he Following:

  1. When you activate your DNA kit, it gets connected to your Ancestry account. In case you don’t have an Ancestry account, you can create one for free by visiting the Ancestry website (https://www.ancestry.com/).
  2. Until you get your test results, make sure to keep your activation code. Processing a DNA sample will not commence until the kit gets activated.
  3. To activate a kit for your minor child, see our article about activating an AncestryDNA kit for your child.
  4. Any adult taking the test must ensure that they are activating it in their Ancestry account. Also, only one DNA kit will be activated for a single account, except for the test of minor children.
  5. If you are looking to create an Ancestry account, you will need to have an email address. In case you don’t have an email address, or if that email address that you have is already associated with an Ancestry account, you must create a new email address.

To Activate a Kit

  1. To begin with, you will first need to click on the Ancestry DNA Kit activation page (https://www.ancestry.com/dna/activate/code) on a web browser.
  2. Once you are on the activation page, you will need to click on the Yes option if you are logged in. However, if you are not logged in already, click on the No option and then sign in to activate your DNA kit. After that, click on the Next
  3. Next, you will need to enter the activation code in the provided field and click on the Next You can find the activation code printed on your tube and instruction packet.

NOTE: You don’t need to enter hyphens.

  1. If you are activating a kit for yourself, you will need to click your Name and then click on the Next

NOTE: In case you are activating a kit for your minor child, you will need to click on the My child option and follow the on-screen instructions. However, if you are activating a kit for another adult, you will need to select the Someone else option and follow the on-screen prompts.

  1. So, in the provided fields, you will need to enter your Birth Year and select Gender. Then, you will need to click on the Next
  2. Then, you will need to go through the DNA Processing Consent, select Review and Consent, and then click on the Next If you do not accept the consent, you will not be able to activate your kit.
  3. In case you want to keep your sample with Ancestry, you will need to click on the I give consent However, if you do not wish to store it, click on the “I do not give consent” option. Then, click on the Next button.
  4. After that, you will need to go through the Informed Consent; select the I have read the Informed Consent

NOTE: It is to be noted that participation or non-participation will not affect your DNA results. So, either you click I give consent or I do not give consent option, simply click on the Next button.

  1. Then, you will need to click on the Yes option to see your DNA matches and get listed as a match. Otherwise, click No option to do not see or be visible to your matches. Then, click on the Next

NOTE: DNA matches are the people who are related to you. In case you do not wish to see by your biological family, simply click on the “No” option. However, if you wish to see and be seen by your biological family, click on the Yes button. This preference can be changed at any time.

  1. If you wish to allow your DNA matches to see your name, you will need to click on your Name. Similarly, if you also wish your DNA matches to see your username, you will need to select your Username. Then, click on the Next

NOTE: In case you would have selected not to be listed as a DNA match, these options will not appear on your screen. Moreover, if you will allow others to see your complete ethnicity, cultural and geographic origins, they will be able to see your ethnicity estimate, as well as Communities.

  1. You will need to select the “Show my complete ethnicity estimated and communities” option on the screen If you wish your DNA matches to be able to check all the regions and communities in your ethnicity estimate. However, if you wish your DNA matches to be able to see only the regions and communities you have in common, you will need to select the “Show only what we have in common” option. Then, click on the Next

NOTE: If you would have selected not to be listed as a DNA match, this option will not appear on your screen.

  1. Once you are in the Kit Notifications section, you will need to click the Yes option to get text updates about the status of your kit. However, if you do not want to receive such updates, select the No option on the screen.

NOTE: If you will click on the Yes option, you will need to provide your phone number in the field that appears on the screen, and click on the Next button.

  1. On the next screen, select the Yes option if you wish to receive weekly emails about new information and relatives based on your DNA results, or select the No option if you don’t want any such weekly emails.
  2. Once you are in the Review section, make sure to review the information you provided thoroughly and then click on the Submit and activate
  3. After that, you will be able to check the status of your DNA kit anytime by pressing the DNA tab located at the top of any page on Ancestry and selecting the Your DNA Results Summary
